Stickier Sticky Rice

They said I could cook sticky rice in a regular electric rice cooker.  Just let it soak for thirty minutes, then run the rice cooker, and then let it sit for another 10 minutes. I thought to myself; GREAT! No more picking out little grains of rice from in between the traditional bamboo basket used for steaming sticky rice.

So the sad truth of it all - you can cook sticky rice in an electric steamer, but it in no way resembles steamed sticky rice. It's got a mushy consistency that I associate with those banana leaf wrapped desserts. So it's back to my bamboo basket.  If anyone has had success making sticky rice in an electrical steamer without it turning into a sticky gelatinous mess please let me know.

For those of you who don't know how to cook sticky rice - the kind you are served with a Lao or Thai dinner - I'm going to lift the bamboo curtain.  Actually I'm just going to link you to an instructional video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItHLe98rdN0
